From The Bottom

I was tasked with designing and publishing a publication but focusing on one specific topic. I wanted to do football as a whole but was told this was too broad. Then I decided to go for grassroots football, or lower leagues.

I had to gather all the content for the book, whether this was secondary or primary. I choose to do different sections to help split this up. The first was a selection of interviews I did to ask people why the support the teams they do and why they didn't follow their local teams, no matter how small.

Next I went and visited local football pitches with a film camera to see the beauty in these smaller, less cared about grounds.

I then sent a survey out on social media and around my university to ask people why they follow their local teams or what their best memories from it were. This was to show people the reason to follow the smaller teams.

Then lastly I found a groundshopper called Steve. This is someone who went around small pitches to watch and review them. I sectioned up the UK and placed his stories in with images from him.

Overall, I wanted the book to feel like these small teams. Rough. I wanted to communicate this through the use of a film camera. The lack of images on some pages. The mud splats dotted around.
